How to Trim Your Pet’s Nails Safely

Nail trimming feels delicate, but with small, unhurried steps it becomes just another manageable part of home care.

Of all home grooming routines, nail trimming is usually the one owners postpone the longest. It doesn’t have to be. With the right moment, a steady clipper and small cuts, trimming becomes quick and quietly unremarkable.

Pick the right moment

Trim when your pet is naturally relaxed — after a meal or a play session, when they are settling down. Rushing is the only real enemy here.

The basic technique

• Hold the paw gently but firmly, without squeezing.
• Trim small amounts at a time, cutting at a slight angle.
• Stay clear of the quick — the soft inner part of the nail. If unsure, trim less.
• Move one nail at a time; pausing between nails is perfectly fine.
• Keep the session short. One or two nails today beats a struggle tomorrow.

For dark-coloured nails, the quick may not be clearly visible even with an LED. Trim small amounts at a time and stop if unsure.

Make it a positive habit

A treat or a favourite toy afterwards teaches your pet that trimming ends well. Many owners trim a few nails at a time, every week or two, rather than doing all of them at once.

Watch for nails touching the floor or catching on blankets — that’s your cue it’s time again.
